How to Mix Rugs in Connected Rooms: 7 Rug & Pillow Combos

Stand in almost any doorway, and you can see more than one room. The living room rug, the runner down the hall, and the one under the dining table all end up in the same view, whether you planned it or not. We designed our Loloi collections to work together for exactly that reason. So here are seven trios we’d happily roll out side by side, each with three pillows to pull it together. Take a whole set (or just the formula!) to apply to your own home.

Two Bold Rugs + One Neutral
Two showstoppers in a row need a breather between them, so put a quiet, creamy rug in the middle and let it do the “calm down” effect. Then let the pillows borrow from both sides: a red plaid for the stripe, navy velvet for the blue traditional. Add one conversation piece just for fun.
Organic Pattern + Solid + Geometric Pattern
This solid barely counts as one. All that texture does the work of a pattern, so it holds its own between a rich traditional and a relaxed plaid. The pillows stay cozy and tonal, with a subtle diamond, a scalloped trim, and a clay velvet that picks up the spice color in the traditional rug.
Floral Pattern + Traditional Pattern + Solid Scallop
A solid rug doesn’t have to be the boring one. That scalloped edge gives plenty of personality and echoes the wavy border on the floral. Midnight blue and gold bring the drama, the traditional sits right in the middle, and the olive solid is the exhale.
Stripe + Traditional Pattern + Bordered
When a stripe and a bordered rug feel worlds apart, find the rug that speaks both languages. This faded traditional has the stripe’s blue and the border’s rusty warmth, so it bridges the two without trying. Plaid is the pillow cheat code here, since it can carry every color in the lineup at once.
Large Scale Floral + Small Scale Floral + Stripe
Two florals and no clashing. It all comes down to scale. A big, airy floral and a small allover one never compete, and a stripe gives them both a straight line to lean on. Denim in all three ties it together, and a soft pink velvet keeps all that blue from going cold.
Traditional Pattern + Large Scale Floral + Bordered
Every trio needs one loud rug. Here it’s the big blush floral, with a warm traditional and a simple bordered rug happy to play supporting roles. A thread of green running through all three is what makes them feel like a set, and earthy plaids and stripes keep the pillows in the same lane.
Two Traditional Florals + One Geometric
Two florals can get a little sleepy, and a crisp diamond pattern wakes them up. Keep the florals different in weight, one dark and dense and one pale and loose, so they read as cousins instead of twins. A wine velvet pillow against all that cool green is the best kind of contrast.
If you take one thing from this post, let it be that three patterns are not too many. Give each rug space to play, find one color that runs through all of them, and let the pillows get a little bold. A home that’s layered and a bit unexpected is always more fun to come home to. Shop the full CLJ x Loloi rugs collection here!
