The Secret to Big, Moody Fall Mums That Last

All I wanted was big, moody, rich, dramatic mums that didn’t die in the NC heat. After living here for 5 years, I finally figured out the cheat code: fake it.

Outdoor Stems | Planters | Doormat
It’s all very easy. And the result is so dramatic, it may be responsible for a few slow-downs in front of our house recently!
My favorite part is that it took me about 30 minutes, and the stems are UV-rated so they’re made to resist fading in the sun. So yeah, don’t be surprised when I “grow” the exact same mums next fall.
Here’s exactly how we did it.
Start with what’s already there: the boxwood topiaries
Instead of swapping the topiaries out for fall, we worked with them. The dense boxwood gives each stem something to grip, so there’s no floral foam, no extra containers, and no rearranging the porch. The boxwood simply becomes the “soil” for the mums.
If you don’t have faux boxwoods yet, they’re worth the investment for exactly this reason: they work year-round on their own. And they turn into a ready-made base whenever you want to add seasonal color.

The faux mum stems: color, quantity, and fluffing
I found these outdoor-rated pansy stems (with UV protection). With any stem arrangement, I usually get more than you think. And I still ended up buying more! I fluffed the stems that arrived overnight and stuck them straight into my (also faux) boxwoods that have lived on our porch for years.
I used 3 boxes per boxwood—16 clusters in each box—in the color, Wine Red. The color is so rich and deep! It’s exactly what I hoped for. This arrangement can stay on our porch through the holidays.
How we did it:
- Fluff every stem. Stems arrive compressed from shipping. Pull the petals and leaves apart and bend them in slightly different directions so they look more natural.
- Insert straight into the boxwood. Push each stem into the topiary, working all the way around so every angle looks full.
- Fill in the gaps. Step back, look for bald spots, and tuck in more clusters until the shape feels round and generous.

Tips to make faux mums that look real outside
- Look for UV-rated stems. This is the big one for a sunny porch. These stems are UV-rated, so they’re made to resist fading in the sun. That’s the difference between a porch that looks good all season and one that looks washed out by the time the leaves drop.
- Buy more than you think. Real mums are dense. Plan on multiple boxes per container to get that full, mounded shape.
- Go deep on color. Rich, saturated tones like Wine Red read as more natural (and more dramatic) from the street than pale or overly bright shades.
- Use a base that hides the stems. A full boxwood topiary conceals every stem end. No boxwood? A planter packed with faux greenery or moss works the same way.
- Store them for next year. When the season’s over, pull the stems, lay them flat in their boxes, and put them away.
Thirty minutes, zero watering, and mums that’ll look this good in December. We’re calling it: faux mums are the fall porch cheat code, and ours will be “blooming” right on schedule next year.
