Everyone’s Looking for Timeless Style. We Found It in Brick.

- This post is sponsored by the Brick Industry Association
A couple of years ago, we packed up our whole life in Idaho, drove clear across the country, and pulled up to a house we’d fallen for first on a screen: a classic red-brick colonial just outside Raleigh. And honestly before we ever walked through the front door, before we saw a single room, the brick had already done its job. It looked settled. Rooted. Like it had been standing there long before us and fully intended to keep standing long after.

That feeling — the one you get before you’ve even parked the car — is the whole reason curb appeal matters. And brick delivers it better than just about anything else we’ve lived with.
If you think about first impressions — the outside of your house is the thing that greets you every single time you come home, and welcomes every person who comes to see you. It sets the tone. A big part of why we love brick is that the tone it sets is warm and permanent. Never trendy, never trying too hard.
Also beautiful and functional aren’t two separate projects. The best homes don’t make you choose. And brick might be the clearest example of that idea on the whole house. It’s one of the prettiest things you can put on an exterior, and it also happens to be one of the toughest.

It looks good, and it keeps looking good
This is the part that sold us on the design front. Brick doesn’t chase trends, so it doesn’t fall out of them either. It comes in tones from creamy whites to warm tans to deep, moody charcoals to the classic red we ended up with, and every one of them reads as timeless rather than dated. You’re not repainting the whole exterior every few years just to keep it looking intentional.
Case in point: we spent forever on our trim color. We tested something like 11 options before we landed on a moody green-gray (Benjamin Moore Cromwell Gray, if you’re curious). But the brick itself? We didn’t touch it. We chose NOT to paint it in this era when it seems like everyone’s painting their brick white. We love the depth and character of the real thing too much to cover it up, and that character is only getting better with age.
If you want to fall down a rabbit hole of what brick can look like, this gallery of real homes is a lovely place to start.

The stuff you don’t think about — until you really need it
Okay, now the less glamorous side: real weather and real emergencies.
Brick is non-combustible, which means it doesn’t feed a fire — a genuinely reassuring thing to know is baked into the very walls of the place your family sleeps. It stands up to wind, rain, freeze-and-thaw winters, and beating summer sun without flinching. Pests can’t eat it. It won’t rot. It doesn’t dent, warp, or peel. (You can read more about how brick protects a home if you want the full picture.)
And then there’s the maintenance, or really the lack of it. There’s no repainting cycle, no residing project looming in your future, no soft spots to worry about. For the most part, you hose it down now and then and get on with your life. There’s a whole list of everyday brick benefits here, but low upkeep is the one we feel most.

The math that surprised us
Here’s the part people don’t always expect: Yes, brick usually costs more up front than other siding options. But when you zoom out and look at the life of a whole house, it often costs less, because you’re not paying to repaint it, replace it, or repair it down the road, and it tends to hold its value beautifully over time. (If you’re a spreadsheet person, the cost comparison is worth a look.)
That reframe changed how we think about exterior choices entirely. Brick actually SAVES you money and stress for the next several decades. It’s an investment in how the house looks and in how long it lasts, and those two things almost never come in the same package.

Why we’d choose it again
So why brick over everything else?
For us, it comes down to a feeling of permanence. We’ve lived with other materials, and there’s a subtle background hum of upkeep and expiration to a lot of them. The paint that will need redoing, the siding that will fade or crack, the sense that you’re renting your exterior from time rather than owning it. Brick is the opposite of that. When we pulled up to our red-brick colonial, it didn’t feel like a house we’d have to keep fixing in order to keep loving. It felt finished in the best way. Like it had earned its place, and we just got to move in.
We’re also suckers for the classic style of brick. All we had to do was choose a trim color we loved and let the brick be the star. It’s forgiving, it’s grounding, and it made our house feel like ours faster than anything we could have added. If we built our house from the ground up tomorrow, we’d choose brick again without a second thought.

If you’re even a little bit brick-curious
If any of this is stirring something in you — whether you’re building, buying, or just daydreaming about a someday house — do yourself a favor and learn a little more before you decide. The Brick Industry Association put together a genuinely helpful hub for exactly this: everything a homeowner might want to know about building with brick. Start there, poke around, and picture it on your own front elevation.
We came for the way it looked and stayed for everything else it does. Five years in, walking up to that red brick still feels like an exhale, and it might for you, too.
